Yes thanks Simon -no doubt the Thomo Cup was lost on crew with other priorities ha! Could elaborate with many stories from
the weekend ( as could most boats am sure) but had alot of fun the second day highlighted by our derby with vice versa-had nothing to do with the 130kg deficit downwind JN!
And WC in J-Force, no more niceness and greetings at the top mark, too much distraction-think it's a violation of rule 744.6( no friendliness at the windward mark)

There are three rules to consider in this situation. In numerical order 42, 47.2 and 49.2

For Rule 47.2, whilst 'on board' is not defined in the rules it is standard practice that if you need a definition of something that is not defined in the RRS, you go to the common use/definition in the (nautical) dictionary.

Webster: On shipboard; in a ship or a boat; on board of; as, I came on board early; to be on board ship.

To me that means, the person should be at least 'out of the water'…. So it is very likely that Rule 47.2 was indeed broken.

The wording in Rule 42 states: ......using only wind and water to increase, maintain or DECREASE her speed. Sticking an arm or a leg in the water to slow down for the start is breaking Rule 42! Let alone a person.

By staying outside the lifelines and not attempting to get back on board, a case could be made that a person hanging onto the boat is positioning their body outside the lifelines, and certainly are not performing a necessary task (Rule 49.2).

Yes great sailing from Davie and the Ace crew and Adam in J- Spot and crew. We really enjoyed our Sunday sail dodging fleets from all directions, was bamboozled as to who had right of way at times-and I believe they had a cruise liner departing Sydney harbour on Saturday as well!!

Simon,
I was onboard with Chris when he took the pic. The helmsman was Mark Bethwaite (from the famous Bethwasite clan) who went onto win the World J-24's held in Sydney a few years later. He did this a week after winning the World Soling title in Perth I believe.
John and Buster were active J-24 sailors sailing with Kevin Hill I recall.
Best regards
Rob Hartnett

My pleasure guys! Special thanks to Jeremy(?) for the ride in the Jury boat and apologies to anyone if we got a bit close, (it was his fault, I wasn't driving :-))I love photographing the J's after so many years sailing them in my earlier years. I learned how they move and use that for framing the pics so hopefully there's something in the set for everyone
